A wild SteamOS appears...

Of course, several hours after I finish my latest Steam Deck news video, Valve announces SteamOS 3.7.8 – the latest stable release which includes support for the Legion Go S! This is truly exciting and the changelog is absolutely MASSIVE!

Steam Deck - SteamOS 3.7.8: Go Country - Steam News
This is the first release of SteamOS 3.7 to the Stable channel. The below notes are for changes since SteamOS 3.6.24. For changes relative to previous 3.7 beta builds see here. This update was re-released with additional client changes.GeneralUpdated to a newer Arch Linux baseUpdated the Linux kernel to 6.11Updated the Mesa graphics driver baseDesktop mode now ships with Plasma 6.2.5Added support for frame limiting with VRR displays (internal and external)Added Battery Charge Limit control to…

Not only did they update the core OS to the latest Linux kernel, Mesa stack, and Desktop, but they also added frame limiting for VRR displays, and they quote:

Improved support for other AMD powered handhelds (like the ROG Ally and original Legion Go)

This is a big deal since the Legion Go S powered by SteamOS is right around the corner!

That's not the only mention of the Legion Go. In fact, in this post Valve has announced that the latest SteamOS recovery image now supports the original Legion Go, the ROG Ally and other AMD-powered handhelds!

This update comes with tons of other features, though.

They've added HFP/HSP profiles for bluetooth devices. They've added battery level display for Bluetooth devices. And Bluetooth devices can now wake up LCD Steam Decks which was a feature only supported on the OLED. They've enabled AMD's P-State CPU frequency control. Desktop mode now supports Surround Sound (though it's still not available in Game Mode, yet). And a ton more!

This update is accompanied by changes to other SteamOS-related pages on Steam. For example, the SteamOS landing page follows modern branding guidelines and mentions.

The most interesting thing on this page is:

Does this mean I can install SteamOS on any device?

We expect most SteamOS users to get SteamOS preinstalled on a Steam Deck or device that incorporates SteamOS. The only devices officially supported on SteamOS right now are Steam Deck and Legion Go S.

We are working on broadening support, and with the recent updates to Steam and SteamOS, compatibility with other AMD powered PC handhelds has been improved. If you are interested in trying out SteamOS on your device and providing feedback, you can use the SteamOS Recovery Image and follow the instructions here.

You heard 'em. It's time to start installing the SteamOS Recovery Image on other AMD devices and reporting issues to Valve!

I'm so excited for SteamOS' arrival and would love to know what you think I should try it on! Let me know on the comments or on Mastodon.
